At a low time in his life Henning took a challenge from friends and decided to provide food and support for many of those in need in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. He planned this to be a one-off event; but what he discovered was a passion for helping those in need.

As Henning repeated his efforts he discovered the joy of helping people feel better about their lives. He found a segment of society who didn’t receive the respect or care that he believes is a basic right and he recognized in himself a need to deliver that respect. His passion was born and has grown to include providing hot meals served with respect and with a lack of judgment both his and that of the volunteers who have been drawn into his circle of caring. These feeding events are delivered with no expectations of the recipients.

On winter nights Henning’s passion takes him to the cold streets of Surrey and the Downtown Eastside with sleeping bags and blankets and warm jackets in order to help those in need to get into a shelter where having your own clean bedding is a requirement for entry.

On a hot summer day Henning’s passion takes him to the meanest streets of Vancouver with cold water, cold fruit and sandwiches for those with no access to these basic needs.

Henning knows he makes a difference; to the people he serves, to our community, to himself and to the volunteers who repeatedly attend the large feeding events and hang on Henning’s words of thanks and encouragement with which he begins each event. Anyone who can serve without judgment and with dignity and respect for those who are in situations which are certainly not always theirs by choice are welcome at One More Time Charity.
